A Healthy Lifestyle Will Help Maintain Women’s Health

The unique health concerns of women cover a broad range of issues, including everything from weakened bone mass and pregnancies to weight concerns and heart disease. And one of the key elements in maintaining women’s health is working with physicians and other healthcare professionals that are knowledgeable about women’s unique health needs. Whether one is concerned with a specific healthcare issue or the desire is to maintain optimum overall health, one of the best defense mechanisms is a healthy lifestyle.

However, doctors with a keen understanding of women and their specialized needs know that prescribing a ‘healthy lifestyle’ is not specific enough to provide the most advantageous outcomes. Instead, it is important for the physicians to also educate their patients. For example, the doctors at Michigan Cardiology not only provide the precise medical care needed for any heart related conditions, but they also teach clients how a healthy weight, exercising and maintaining a normal cholesterol level can help keep the heart healthy. When patients have a clear understanding of the connection between a healthy lifestyle and better overall health, making the commitment to live a healthy lifestyle becomes much easier.
Women are more likely to suffer a heart attack than men. Not only that, but women are also less likely to survive a heart attack. One of the reasons for this surprising fact is that the symptoms women experience can be much different than those typically experienced by men. But heart disease is only one area of concern for women. Another major of health concern is that of women’s gynecological health. Included in this broad health category are the sub-categories of vaginal health, reproductive health, birth control, sexual health, and breast health. Whether a patient is concerned about a vaginal discharge, breast discomfort, or other issue, the Michigan OBGYN team of experts will confidently work to resolve the problem.
Another primary area of focus in women’s healthcare is keeping bones strong. After menopause many women are prone to develop bone loss. The result of this can be osteoporosis. In order to maintain good bone health a diet that includes adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is recommended. Vitamin D is found in fortified milk and orange juice, mackerel, salmon, and tuna fish. Milk, yogurt, cheese and green leafy vegetables are good sources of calcium. Dietary supplements can also supply these nutritional requirements.
In addition to eating right, weight-bearing exercise is also important for good bone health. But even with attention to eating right and exercising, orthopedic injuries can happen. Some may be related to falls and other accidents, and some are sports injuries, but others are caused by repetitive tasks. This class of orthopedic injuries includes carpal tunnel syndrome. The Michigan Orthopedics physicians are prepared to diagnose and treat all types of orthopedic injuries.
Besides regular healthcare checkups preventive screening is an important way to detect and diagnose health concerns. Annual mammograms should begin at age 40. Yearly cervical cancer screenings are also recommended. Annual colon cancer screenings should begin at age 50.

Ketogenic Diet curing disease

What is a Ketogenic Diet and What is it used for?

Ketogenic-DietThe ketogenic diet is used to treat children suffering from specific types of epilepsy that have not responded favorably to traditional treatments. The ketogenic diet has proven to be surprisingly effective in reducing the severity of seizures or even ‘curing’ this disease in some individuals, and is especially effective in treating multiple seizure types.

What the Ketogenic Diet Does

The ketogenic diet is defined by a high fat to carbohydrate calorie intake ratio. A calorie restriction of 10-25% is also often imposed. This diet is designed to induce ketosis, which is a physiological state defined by the production of ketone bodies. These ketone bodies are a byproduct of the body burning fat stores to produce energy. Mild ketosis can occur naturally in healthy individuals should their carbohydrate stores be depleted enough to cause increased fat metabolism, for example, during prolonged, intense exercise. High ketone levels though, can pose a serious health threat because blood and tissues will become acidic. The ketogenic diet is designed to induce moderate to high levels of ketosis and therefore should never be attempted without close medical supervision.

Using the Ketogenic Diet

The typical ratio for infants and teens starting on the diet is 3:1, but over time the ratio may be increased to 4:1. The greatest efficacy is seen in diets with higher ratios, but some children have a hard time tolerating these ratios. Recent studies have shown that lower ratios may be effective enough for some children and may be appropriate for those unable to tolerate a traditional ketogenic diet. Although fluid intake used to be restricted, this is no longer required by most treatment centers. The reduction in calorie intake may also be unnecessary, but overweight children may experience a benefit in terms of reduced seizures. Laboratory rodents maintained on a calorie-restricted diet alone experienced reduced seizure frequency, so there may be a small benefit to calorie restriction. Once the ketogenic diet is started it can take up to two weeks before a reduction in seizure frequency is observed.

Why is the Ketogenic Diet Effective?

No one actually knows why the ketogenic diet is effective. Recent research revealed that laboratory rodents maintained on a ketogenic diet experienced an almost 50% increase in the number of mitochondria inhabiting nerve endings in the brain, which are the subcellular organelles critical for producing the energy required for cellular survival and function. A substantial increase in the expression of genes involved in energy metabolism was also observed. These results were interpreted as suggesting the ketogenic diet improves energy production and storage in the brain, which in turn provides a buffer against metabolic stressors that can cause seizures.

Treat Chlamydia with Azithromycin and Doxycycline

Sexually transmitted infections, which can be either bacterial or viral in nature, have become quite common among people. Recent statistics indicate that the number of people suffering from these infections has increased to a great extent. Chlamydia is the most commonly experienced sexually transmitted infection and is bacterial in nature. Usually bacterial infections do not show any symptoms at all, which makes them harder to diagnose. However, this fact does not make them less dangerous and so it is important to treat them at the earliest opportunity. The most commonly and popularly used chlamydia treatments are Azithromycin and Doxycycline. (more…)

Blood

health

It’s inside many living creatures – from humans to polar bears – but not everyone knows what blood really is. In an adult’s body, there are nearly 11 pints of blood. This liquid is comprised of cells and plasma, a water liquid that cells float around in. Additionally, blood also contains a number of hormones, nutrients, and waste products.
When it comes to blood, there are three main kinds of cells: There are red and white blood cells, and there are platelets. The white cells fight disease, the red cells carry oxygen, and the platelets’ main function is to help with clotting (i.e. to stop bleeding, etc.).

Ever wonder why blood is red? Well, it’s simply a matter of numbers. There are more red blood cells than any of the others (i.e. roughly about 45% of one’s blood). Thus, blood is red.

The plasma, in which the blood cells float, is 90% water. The other 10% of the plasma is made up of protein molecules and proteins charged with holding hormones and vitamins, among other things, that the body needs.

Blood is how the body carries out a lot of its functions (i.e. how a person stays alive). It carries important items, it defends against infection, and it keeps oxygen flowing throughout the body. Thus, if a living creature loses too much blood, the body would then not be able to perform its functions and the creature would die. Blood may very well be thicker than water, but without it, living creatures wouldn’t stand a chance. (more…)

Baby Bed Time Lotion

mother and babyI am a brand new mom to a beautiful baby boy. At my baby shower I received a couple of bottles of Baby Bedtime Lotion. When my little man came home with me he had dry peeling skin on his body. I was told that this often happens right after a baby is born and air is exposed to their delicate sensitive skin. I was so concerned for him and I didn’t know what to do to ease the itchy discomfort that comes with it! I made sure to apply lotion to moisturize these areas frequently. I had thought that I would save the bedtime lotion for bed, but it smelled so good that I used it on him all the time!

The soothing chamomile and lavender scent provided relief to his dry skin and quieted his restlessness. I always use it after bath time so that the drying effects of soap and water don’t over dry his delicate skin. I use it on all his body parts: legs, arms, tummy, back, feet, hands, and carefully smooth it in his cheeks. I put those cute little mittens on his hands afterwards so he doesn’t stick his fingers in his mouth and suck the lotion off. It does dry quickly and he smells delicious!

I wound up preferring one of the bottles because of its consistency. I prefer it a little thinner because it is smoothes on easier and dries much faster than the thicker stuff. I am going to finish up the other bottle because I do not like to waste. Once it is gone though I will be stocking up on the Baby Bedtime Lotion as it works for us the best, and I would highly recommend as a perfect baby  baby gift.
